Being as you are new to PLCs, I might recommend a newer generation PLC. Take the Siemens S7-200 for instance. The high level instruction set and the advanced capabilities of their programming software allows you to accomplish complicated tasks with much more ease that with traditional software.

Anyone have the Siemens S7 PLC simulator
Is there an easier way to get large hunks of data out of the S7 processors using the Step7 programming software (I didn't buy DDE server software)? Our system is based on CE/EN standards (including safety standards EN954-1) and utilizes a Siemens S7-315 PLC system. Software is Siemens STEP7 and Siemens HiGraph. I assume that AB would be the PLC supplier to go for. US Standards will be required. My knowledge of both is neglectable. I need a hands-on approach.

The only requirement is that it be Single-Master (rules AB's DH1 out) and that Software Handshaking can be disabled (rules Siemens 3964R out). This is what I used as my example since it was relatively easy to get Modbus comms on the Siemens S7 PLC we used at that particular site. Unlike many other protocols,

Or does anyone have any better (cheaper) ways of getting a 187kbps mpi solution to interface to the S7. I know about using the serial cable convertor but this reduces the comms to 38.4 kbps. Also if you buy the Siemens cards such as CP5611 or 5412 what additional Siemens software is needed ?

It also includes facilities for simulating your PLC in order to test software: that's a big time saver. S5 for windows can be extended to allow S7 to be programed as well.
